Our Work Together
The main focus of our work may be on relationships - either those within ourselves, or those around us. See below for more information on how we can work with chronic/ persistent pain, food and body-specific issues and relationship therapy. I work in an integrative way with many theories (Attachment theory, Person-centred and CBT). I am also an accredited Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) practitioner, Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) trained, and am Internal Family Systems (IFS) informed. Our work will likely use a combination of these theories (and others) to best suit what you’re looking for/ working towards. We have options on session duration and frequency and will work together to understand which approach may best suit your needs/ goals. (for more info see the grow page).
I often work with people who are curious about being Neurodivergent (Autistic, ADHD, ADD, ADHD). Much of this work is around understanding how this impacts their lives and finding ways/skills to overcome any challenges. I do not see Autism/ ADD or ADHD as disorders, more points of difference and something we can often learn to embrace. I cannot diagnose, and a formal diagnosis is not required to explore our work together.
Therapy can mean different things to different people and it is important to find the right therapist to suit your needs and the way you would like to work. I work with adults on their own or in relationships (not specific to romantic relationships).
My Approach to therapy
I work with a wide range of presenting difficulties such as (this is not an exhaustive list):
Clinical Supervision
I offer clinical supervision to individuals working with adults integratively. Drawing on a range of modalities; my original training included a person- centred approach, attachment and CBT, however I now also integrate other approaches such as Transactional Analysis, and I am Internal Family Systems informed.
Please note that although I am EMDR trained I am not yet a consultant so I do not offer EMDR supervision at present.
Persistent or chronic pain
My work with clients includes working with those that have persistent/ chronic pain conditions. This can be defined as pain that persists for longer than three months or longer than the usual recovery period following an injury. Often these clients have tried many other treatments and have spent a long time investigating their condition. I work to support clients in exploring neuroplastic pain and how the brain can interpret signals sent from the body.
Eating Disorders/ Disordered eating and Body Image
I am passionate about working with clients to improve their relationship with food and their bodies. We can work together to understand where the poor body image, disordered eating/ eating disorder came from and he mechanisms that keep us stuck in that relationship. Our work will be informed by an Intuitive Eating and a Health At Every Size (HAES) approach.
Addictive behaviours
Working under the heading of addictive behaviours also covers working with obsessive compulsive behaviours (OCD) due to the similarities in the compulsive nature. Addictive behaviours aren’t usually the ‘issue’, they’re often a solution to the issue, so we will work together to gently understand the behaviours without judgement.
Couples & Relationship Therapy
Much of my passion is linked to relationships, that's the relationships with our internal Self and also those in our lives. Relationship therapy is essentially communication therapy, it helps us communicate our needs and wants better to get the best out of ourselves and the relationship. Relationship therapy can be challenging and totally amazing.
There is often one partner that wants to come for therapy and one that is slightly more resistant, worried about coming, or "doesn't see the point"- all of that is totally normal. I do however need both parties to be willing to come and the rest can be explored. I work with couples to understand the challenges within the relationship and take into account each side of what is happening. I usually explain that I am active within the therapeutic relationship, which means I don't take the sit back and watch approach- we work together.
I also offer co-therapy with Kirsty for Neurodifferent couples. This is where you, as a couple, have a primary therapist (either me or Kirsty) and then we come together to collaborate as a four. Together, we offer professional experience, clinical insight and lived experience to help navigate challenges in the relationship. It is important to note that we don’t negatively label differences; we work to build understanding and aid communication. Kirsty is much better at putting words on a page, so please see the link to her website for further information if you feel this may be something that might suit your needs.
"Having had various therapists and counsellors in the past I can safely say there is no one like Emma. I have worked with her for a couple of years and the improvement within myself is more than I ever thought was possible.
She is incredibly approachable, non judgemental and honest. She definitely considers the individual and is so quick to understand you and your specific needs.
Needless to say I thoroughly recommend Emma!"
I can’t express how much Emma has helped me on and off over the past 3 years. I was experiencing a bereavement in my family going back to 15 years ago and over a course of 8 months I felt like a different person, I like that I can have one off sessions if I feel I just need to check in.
I couldn’t recommend going to Emma enough, I give all my friends and family her information if they to need to reach out to somebody.
